Foreign ExCHANGE?

Every year, foreign exchange remains one of the most hyped opportunities amongst sophomores providing them with a delightful opportunity to spend a semester in a new land. Amongst the many who apply for it (leaving out those whose grade sheets weigh too less in numbers to make them eligible for a semester abroad), only a few get through and the shattered dreams of the rest compel them to question the procedure and they do deserve an answer to “why not them”.

GSec Review

Well the title says it all, but for formality, this section covers the good, the bad and the ugly of the Student Heads of IIT Delhi’s various Boards. These boards form the mediators, the facilitators and arbitrator between the students and the administration. Another year, another semester but the same old General Secretaries. With half their tenure over, let us see how much they squirm under the microscope.

The Placement Saga

Another Placement season. Another season of lucrative offers for some and heartbreak for others. Only this time around, there were a little too many heartbreaks. Far more than one associates with an institution like IIT Delhi . Despite 270 organisations offering nearly 400 job roles and 20 lavish international offers being tabled, the general feeling among the students, both the seniors and the juniors, is that of disappointment.

There was definitely a huge pressure on the placement season this year, considering heavy participation from 5th year dual and M.Tech students.

A Mass Exodus

1st January 2016. The first day of the semester begins with fresh energy and the classes are brimming with energy. Students are full. There is excitement among the students for the new courses. There are promises (like the ones made previous semester but which never get fulfilled) of being sincere and regular this time. Fast forward 3 months to the last date of withdrawal. By this time the classes are half empty. The enthusiasm to learn has turned into a battle to save grades for many. The withdrawal period witnesses some quite interesting stories to talk about.

Fee Hike at the IITs

After months of prolonged speculation on whether the government will or will not raise the fees of IITs in accordance with the recommendation of the joint IIT council, the cat is finally out of the bag. The Union human resources development (HRD) ministry has decided to more than double the tuition fees of IITs from the current Rs 90,000 annually to Rs 2 lakh.

Given the IIT standing committee, expert committee and finally, the high-powered IIT panel all recommending steep fee hikes, the decision to raise the fees was more about "when" than "if". But still, many who refused to read the writing on the wall are a disappointed lot today.

Waterworks

#1 There was a fire near block 6 (not sure) in the garbage heap...lack of water created a very awkward situation at the security area...apparently the extinguisher was faulty too and the poor guy ran from pillar to post to get sufficient water. At one point they contemplated on calling the fire truck for this puny thing!
