Important things to keep in mind
· Honesty to self(tells prospective employer what you are)
· Needs to highlight commitment (grades, projects, interns, etc.)
· The ideal length of a CV is 1 page.
· It is a highlight about yourself, focus on those things that you wish to highlight to the employer.
CONSTRUCTING A CV
o Use a tabular format if nothing else is prescribed a common tabulation can be Class, institution, board and subject marks
o These facts can go in chronological or reverse chronological order
· Academic achievements
o Institute Academic achievements, recent first
o Then class 12 and class 10 achievements
o Then any significant achievement in Olympiads and extra-curricular exams
o Not everything you put needs to be certified, like being the class topper cannot be certified. But if it is true put it down in your CV.
o Give less priority to class projects and more to external ones
o In internship section focus on what was your contribution and role in the intern
· Extracurricular activities
o If there are enough of them put papers published, and other such academic achievements under a separate bracket in extracurricular activities or in a different sub topic named papers/conferences/seminars.
o Highlight latest things.
o You may or may not have certificates for all of them, but that’s not such an issue as long as it has truly been done by you.
· Hobbies and interests
o Hobby: Something done on a regular basis that adds value to the doer
o Interest: Occasional involvement
· Proficiency in languages
o Able to speak read or write with suitable fluency.
o Half cooked learning does not count.
· Computer skills
o If it is relevant to the job profile include them.
o Avoid stating Microsoft word excel unless you are certified in them.
DOs and DON'Ts
o Bad English

o Involve too many personal details
§ Create decent Gmail IDs.
§ Stick to British English
Why Group Discussion? What qualities are being tested?
§ Adaptability with a team: To analyze whether or not one has a dictatorial attitude, and if he/she is capable of leading the team
Types of GD
§ Unstructured G.D: Topic is given, and then some time to think and then discussion is held without any moderation.
§ Structured G.D: Moderator Is present who regulates the GD
§ Case study: Could be a paper, case study, article from an editorial, etc. What is given are the symptoms, and the group has to determine the causes.
Different kinds of guys in a GD
§ Person with several ideas, Problem with such a guy is that he does not elaborate much, but switches rapidly between points - Professors
§ Waits for an idea to come up then elaborates upon it, gives examples, problem with this guy is that he never comes up with original ideas - Salesmen
§ Obsessed with attacking people, but can never be overwhelmed - Butchers
§ Brings people back to topic, won’t add much to the discussion, stops group from digressing - Gatekeeper
§ Obsessed with time – Time keeper
§ Listens to the discussion but is not actively participating - Spectator
§ Does not involve himself in any way with the discussion - Passenger
What should one be in a GD?
§ Depends on the situation
§ May have to express multiple views, Professor
§ May have to elaborate, Salesmen
§ May have to be assertive, Butcher
§ May have to listen to others, Spectator
§ Remember that it is not a debate, it is an evolving discussion and it needs to contain diplomatic aspects
§ Point: Raise a point
§ Reasoning: Give appropriate reasoning
§ Example: Give connected analogies or examples
§ Summarize: Briefly summarize, highlighting the main aspects
Should I start a Group Discussion?
§ High risk but high return
§ Start if you know the topic
§ Do not overtly take a stance
How to tackle an aggressive member?
§ Try not to contradict the aggressor, make eye contact with him/her, give them reassurance of their points, then move on to another view.
§ Summary: Do not try to include your opinion or any new points during the group summary, try including the major themes of the discussion, what all was discussed, and the conclusion, if there was any.
§ Addressing: Try to address politely and in a formal way, avoid pointing towards the person.
§ Content versus process: 50-50% weightage. Read newspapers/editorials to improve upon your content.
§ Body language: Try to utilize your speaking time in the best way, try to interject the speaker when he is culminating and starts speaking low. Do creative things if you can carry them. Most important thing is maintaining Eye Contact.
