The President of India,Shri Pranab Mukherjee, addressed the students and faculty members of all the IITs , NITs and other centrally funded institutions via video conferencing at 12 pm yesterday.
Held twice a year, the issue being addressed was ‘Democracy and Governance’.
At IIT Delhi, the video conference was screened live in the Seminar Hall through NKN (National Knowledge Network). Prof R.K Shevgaonkar, Director , IIT Delhi, was present for the entire duration of the 45-minute event along with several other faculty members and a handful of students.
The President, throughout the course of his speech, stressed on the importance of the need to make the youth of the country an active participant in the progress and the development of the country. He said that good governance cannot be taken for granted and has to be nurtured by properly developing the existing institutions of the country. He also went on to say that the key of good governance is to have the well-being of the people as its focal point. His address was followed by a question-answer session in which extremely pertinent questions regarding challenges to good governance were raised.
While such initiatives are commendable , it remains to be seen if they can actually contribute in making our democracy more meaningful, especially in the context of the fact that India ranks 135 among 187 countries on the Human Development Index.
