The open house organized this weekend by IIT Delhi stood apart, but the fashion in which the Department of Applied Mechanics stood out was nothing short of a spectacle. As I walked towards Block IV, the airship stole my attention, and boy was I happy to be reporting for the department.

They say innovation is using existing technology to develop new products, application of knowledge in a way which is nothing short of pure, unadulterated genius, and by the products I saw, I can easily say this was one of the most amazing experiences I have had. The sheer amount of time spent on conceptualizing and developing ideas like the cycle based devices: cyclic treadle pump, exerciser-cum-washing machine, as well as cycle operated battery charger, all of which worked on the same gear and chain mechanism, but had different ideological origins, was, in effect, extraordinary.

The crowd came in waves, and its general approval was distorted, with teachers especially appreciating the washing machine, and the students preferring the armor or the mosquito trap. On the other hand, the commoners really appreciated the Naval Construction Wing’s approaches towards the development of Varun, an underwater glider, as well as the ROV for the observation of underwater hulls to ease the repair process. However, the consensus on the treadle pump was simple. It was a work of art. Simple application of pistons and gear mechanism to ease the process of pumping water out in rural areas, with an option to invest in solar powered motor for easier use caused it to be easily understandable as well as easily usable.

At the end of the day, I would simply end by calling the day a success and an amazing experience for the visitors, and for me.
