Open house ,the day when IITD celebrates innovation and technology, saw the premises of IIT Delhi flooded with young minds gung ho to know more about science and technology. The Centre for Polymer Science and Engineering (CPSE) mainly emphasised on plastics along with applications of polymers . The first stall showcased flame retarding plastics which are made by adding non-halogentaed FR additives to flammable plastics.
”The flammable one burns like a candle, while the non-flammable one doesn’t give fumes”, said the research scholar who is working on this. Also, another stall delineated the proportionality between the rate of degradation of plastic and its starch content. The stall on 'fly ash based brake pads’ saw a large number of avid students listening to the process of formation of brake pads, used in SUVs and cars, made from phenol formaldehyde and fly ash.The never-ending nylon threads being rolled on the glass rods in the last stall mustered a large number of school students exuberantly watching the synthesis of Nylon 6-10. The students found the stalls educative and their escorting teachers were thankful to IIT for this endeavour.
